This is especially true if you compare to a Berserker Barbarian's Frenzy ability, the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian's Ancestral Protector's ability, the Storm Herald Barbarian's Storm Aura ability, or the Zealot Barbarian's Divine Fury ability. Reading it that way might make this more enjoyable for you.So looking over the options for the Totem Barbarian, and to be honest while the Bear and Wolf totems are mostly ok, Eagle, Elk, and Tiger all leave a bit to be desired. The way I read it is you can have abilities from different animal totems, so picking a different animal later does not change your previous picks. I would recommend reading Path of the Totem Warrior, just because it seems you might have read it as you can switch totems at higher levels but that causes the lower level choices to switch. Also this would take away the ability to mix up what abilities you get at the various levels so if you switched a Totem it would be a top down change of all your abilities (that could be a bit hard to keep track of as you level up, especially if you change Totems often). So if you wanted to be able to switch Totems as you play I would require you to attune to the Totem you want to use, which means you cannot switch Totems mid battle. Those types of things generally require attunement. The way you described it makes it sound like the Totem is a magical item granting you abilities the way a magic ring might. So later Totem animal picks do not change your previous ones.Ībout what you suggested, it sounds a little too "easy" in my opinion. So you can pick Bear first and then Eagle second, but picking Eagle second does not change the attributes you get from picking the Bear the first time.

You just gain the attribute of the animal you pick at that level. (I should note that I found a past reddit post with this almost idea from 2 years ago, still I wanted to see your fresh thoughts on this)įromy understanding as you level up in the Path of The Totem Warrior, you don't actually switch animal totems. So, what do y'all think? Any feedback much appreciated, thanks! We have some time until campaign start as we got IRL stuff to figure out and sort through first, so DM said they they'll read up and make sure this won't be to OP of a build.

I've talked to my DM and they agreed so far. I didn't want to be able to switch Totems all day and anytime, so I feel the limit to how many Rages I would have per Long Rest could help. Has a flair like Udyr from League of Legends that I like. For example, when switching from Bear Totem to Wolf Totem, the perks of the Bear Totem end and the Wolf Totem perks are activated. Also, benefits of Totems DO NOT carry over when switching to another. Can only do this up to how many Rages that Barbarian has per Long Rest. While in a Rage the Barbarian can switch between the totems, but must burn 1 Rage in order to do so. Give the Barbarian access to ALL the totems, but have ONE active at a time. So I came up with an idea to spin it a bit:

One thing I'm not digging about this Path is you got ONE totem and you can switch it up after a few levels, but it's all you got. Discovered the Barbarian: Path of the Totem Warrior and really digging the Totems and after talking with my the DM it seems to be a really great fit for their campaign. Settled I want to go for a melee type character as I've yet to really dip into that side of the action. Hey all, talking to a DM about the kind of campaign they'll be running and I've been shopping potential character ideas in my head. Thanks again to everyone that chimed in, very much appreciated! Have reread and now leaning away from Homebrewing. UPDATE:1: was corrected by people in comments that I massively misunderstood/misread the Totem Warrior Path.
